Look, I still like her well enough. [Which is saying a lot, for him.] I want to be able to work with her. Talk to her. I'd like for her and Xerxes to be able to do that, too. But some idea of how that's going, from a perspective like yours? Why, I'd leave your cow alone for that.

They're not going to get along any time soon, with how they're acting.

I don't know her side either. I've asked. So is that a 'no, you can keep harassing Marge', then?

I don't want to spy on my friend for you if she doesn't want to talk to you.

Good for you, Pollyanna, but that's not what I'm asking you to do.

She didn't tell me the whole story. I know Xerxes's story, but when I asked her for details she thought I was taking his side. Just talk to her. You don't have to tell me what she said; I just want some opinions on how to get things to smooth over.

Only time is going to help with that- time and treating her decently and politely. Breakups aren't ever clean and no matter what you try, there's always going to be hurt, jealousy and anger in the way of smoothing things over.

[Al rubs his hand over the cow.]

This is my best guess. Unless Xerxes gives her a very, very compelling reason to personally like him, they're never going to find middle ground. He's always going to be the intrusion she remembers. He was always closer to you than she was, and she only remembers that.

Of course she thought you were siding with him -- you care about him. And you don't care about her. There isn't any other option in her mind.

Besides which, Xerxes doesn't like her. He's not going to be able to play that he does, and she knows it.

You do know that we were never "going steady", right?

And Xerxes doesn't like her because she has thrown every effort he's made back in his face. But let's be honest, she does that to everyone, even people she doesn't think 'stole' me away.

But she did love you.

[Bluntly. He gives Lucifer a level look.]

And that's why I don't think this is going to be smoothed over any time soon. Give her a bit of space. She needs it right now.

[He supposes the real obstacle to getting Jinx and Break to work together is Break. But like Al said, with a compelling enough reason, that could change.]

She has space. She decides when we go skin rabbits. And with how this world works, we don't have time to wait for her to sew herself together.

You don't have the time to repair the damage you do if you make it worse, either. She's not comfortable, especially not with Xerxes, and he isn't comfortable with her.

Forming a bond takes time and compelling reasons. I don't have better advice or insight than that.

Well. That's not good enough to deserve me leaving the cow alone. But you tried.

You said "insight", not "solution". Don't hold me accountable for something you can't figure out either.

Actually I said, 'talk to her and get back to me'. But now I think that would be a waste of time.

[Really, though, that's hard to do with Al. He's very mellow, but Lucifer knows his buttons.]

Depends. Are you expressing all that anger, or choking it down so you don't 'inconvenience' people?

Have you been talking to Xerxes?

Constantly. But not about you. Why? Something I should know?

My temper has been a little short lately.

Did you lose your temper with him...?

Of course not. He's helping me channel it into work and other useful things.

And...you thought the only way I'd know if you were angry is if he told me?

[Lucifer is so terribly amused, and it makes him seem so young. You could almost forget what he is.]

[Al sighs and looks at him, a little wry.]

Why so interested?

I'm not the only Lucifer in town, so I should stake a claim early.

Oh, and because if you snap, you'll do it all over Xerxes. I don't want that.
