Because even if you snap, Ed and the helpless little kids are safe, right? But you have complicated 'layers' to deal with, with him.

[Lucifer just looks at him, not believing that much. But he does have reasons for his cynicism.]

[Lucifer doesn't feel guilt, or self-loathing, so it comes out flippant.]

That when I do get 'close' to people, other people stage interventions and start riots. So mostly I keep it quiet, unless they're an exhibitionist...or have a protective housemate who happens to be close to a certain someone.

[Hence why he almost never locks conversations he has with Luca.

He cares about me. Some would even say 'a lot'. And not because I've manipulated him.

Because I don't think you do know. He buffers it- tells you all he'll kill me if I don't toe a line. And it's true, one of us or both of us would end up dead.

He makes it sound like he's only close so he can muzzle me. That's not how it really is. And the more you're around us...
