[He whistles as the walk, which disguises the fact he's actually listening very closely.]

Luca made a mistake, and he's only recently realized how big it was. ... but there's no fixing this one.

Look, with demons, you should never believe absolutes. You may not be able to break a deal with them, but that doesn't mean things end there.

That the deal may be final for poor little Luca, but Jim might be able to save him after the technical details. I've seen it happen.

Well that's where the 'hope' comes in. For most people anyway.

Either, but especially Luca.

He has a lot of promise. If he'd been born into my world, I probably would have told my demons he was off limits.

Why would you tell them that?

Because kids who are willing to be eaten or damned for their brothers are too rare to just throw away. And I care more about potential than I do about some demon getting his three square meals a day.

Brave, too. Which explains why you're so protective of him. It's always the brave ones who get into trouble.
